49: δια τουτο και η σοφια του θεου ειπεν αποστελω εις αυτους προφητας και αποστολους και εξ αυτων αποκτενουσιν και εκδιωξουσιν— edit Textus Receptus
49: Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:— edit KJV text
49: For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles: and some of them they will kill and persecute.— edit Douay text

See "Mt 23:29ff".

The wisdom of God. By the wisdom of God, here, is undoubtedly meant Jesus himself. What he immediately says is not written in the Old Testament. Jesus is called the word of God (Jn 1:1), because he is the medium by which God speaks or makes his will known. He is called the wisdom of God, because by him God makes his wisdom known in creation (Col 1:13ff) and in redemption (1Cor 1:30). Many have also thought that the Messiah was referred to in the 8th chapter of Proverbs, under the name of Wisdom.

I will send, &c. See Lk 10:3 Mt 10:16.

Shall slay, &c. Comp. Jn 16:2 Acts 7:52, Acts 7:59 Jam 5:10; Acts 12:2, Acts 22:19; 2Cor 11:24, 2Cor 11:25; 2Chr 36:15, 2Chr 36:16.
