11: And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity
eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise
lift up herself.
11: And behold there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity
eighteen years. And she was bowed together: neither could she look
upwards at all.
There was a woman which lead a spirit of infirmity. Was infirm,
or was weak and afflicted. This was produced by Satan, Lk 13:16.
Eighteen years. This affliction had continued a long time. This shows that the miracle was real; that the disease was not feigned. Though thus afflicted, yet it seems she was regular in attending the worship of God in the synagogue. There in the sanctuary, is the place where the afflicted find consolation; and there it was that Jesus met her and restored her to health. It is in the sanctuary and on the Sabbath, also, that he commonly meets his people, and gives them the joys of his salvation.
